What’s Sugar Beet about??
Villagers in Muratköy, Turkey, have fiercely protected their crop, a medicinal sugar beet, for centuries. But now their secret is out. Friends of the World, a comically dysfunctional non-profit, intends to make the beet its gift to the world as a cure-all sweetener that makes people healthier. But a nefarious family from eastern Anatolia has other plans.
Wanting to do good and save the world, Martin, a naive college-aged intern from Oregon, is sent by Friends of the World to Muratköy to learn first-hand about the sugar beet while masquerading as an English teacher. Martin falls in love with one of his students, Ayşe, a headstrong 19-year-old daughter of a beet farmer. Engaged to an older man against her will, Ayşe will do anything in her power to escape her fate.
Together, the young couple journeys across Turkey to save the sugar beet. Martin learns that saving the world is not what he thought it would be and that Ayşe grapples with her own inner conflict. Set in the early 2000s at the beginning of the Erdoğan regime in Turkey, this coming-of-age romance bravely crosses cultures and will keep you on the edge.
